The last few weeks before winter vacation are always a very fun, but hectic time. This week we juggled extra band and chorus rehearsals, field trips and assemblies.
In Math we continued to study decimals up to the thousandths place. We will finish unit four before vacation, starting fresh with unit five in January. Unit five focuses on multi-digit multiplication. We will learn the Partial Products algorithm as well as the traditional algorithm. A tutorial on Partial Products can be found here.
In Reading and Writing we began the week by reading a short story called "When You Were Small" by Sara O'Leary. Students them began writing their own short stories called, "When I Was Small." We wrote, revised and edited all week! Some students began their final drafts on Friday. Final drafts will have illustrations! We are hoping to have these go home on Friday. I have several writing pieces that I've held on to for report card purposes. Now that report cards have been sent home, I will send home the writing pieces next week.
Report Card envelopes need to be returned to school no later than Friday, December 21st. The contents of the envelop can be kept at home (I have the originals at school, you have copies).
Our Winter Mug Exchange is Friday, December 21st. If you would like to volunteer to bring something in and haven't yet, you still have time! I'll be sending an email out tomorrow to those that have already volunteered. Thank you! We are still looking for some paper products, fruit kabobs and hot cocoa.
Thank you for sharing your children with me this year. They are such a wonderful group. Hug them tightly this weekend!

Week in Review
We had a busy and fun week in Room 31! The kids were excited to share about their Thanksgiving traditions and some of their memories from over the years. As a class, we created a thankful tree to decorate our classroom. Each of the leaves of our tree has something we are thankful for. We are quite a thankful group!
This week in math we started Unit 4: Decimals and Their Uses. We are only a few lessons in and we are seeing just how difficult decimals can be! We've been practicing how to correctly speak "decimal talk" and comparing decimals to fractions. We'll be spending next week doing much of the same. Incidentally, on Friday I sent home the unit two assessment and progress report that I forgot to send home weeks ago. I'll be sending home the unit three assessment and progress report next week.
We have been writing up a storm this week! We started our unit on essays by starting with a five paragraph essay about our favorite foods. With some yummy pictures to prompt them, students wrote very descriptive paragraphs and we practiced writing introductions and conclusions to essays. We'll continue with this unit through December.
In Social Studies we continue to study the North East Region of the United States. We've been practicing locating states on the UNited States map and playing JINGO (Geography Bingo) to learn some facts about all the 50 states.
This week in Reading, we read a story called Chin Yu Min and the Ginger Cat. It's an interesting story about a widow who has trouble asking for help from her friends. We'll be working on this story again next week with more of a writing focus.
With the the Holidays coming up, there is a lot of opportunity to celebrate and give back. This month we will be having another food drive sponsored by our World Ambassadors. Our class is collecting boxes of cereal. Our goal is 40 boxes for our class!
On December 21st, our class will have a hot cocoa and movie party. I'll be sending home a volunteer sheet for anyone who would like to help!
Upcoming Dates to Remember:
Holiday Bazaar - December 10th-14th
Report Cards - December 14th
Can Drive Collection Date - December 19th
Winter Band and Chorus Concert -
Winter Break - December 24th - January 2nd
