The last few weeks before winter vacation are always a very fun, but hectic time. This week we juggled extra band and chorus rehearsals, field trips and assemblies.
In Math we continued to study decimals up to the thousandths place. We will finish unit four before vacation, starting fresh with unit five in January. Unit five focuses on multi-digit multiplication. We will learn the Partial Products algorithm as well as the traditional algorithm. A tutorial on Partial Products can be found here.
In Reading and Writing we began the week by reading a short story called "When You Were Small" by Sara O'Leary. Students them began writing their own short stories called, "When I Was Small." We wrote, revised and edited all week! Some students began their final drafts on Friday. Final drafts will have illustrations! We are hoping to have these go home on Friday. I have several writing pieces that I've held on to for report card purposes. Now that report cards have been sent home, I will send home the writing pieces next week.
Report Card envelopes need to be returned to school no later than Friday, December 21st. The contents of the envelop can be kept at home (I have the originals at school, you have copies).
Our Winter Mug Exchange is Friday, December 21st. If you would like to volunteer to bring something in and haven't yet, you still have time! I'll be sending an email out tomorrow to those that have already volunteered. Thank you! We are still looking for some paper products, fruit kabobs and hot cocoa.
Thank you for sharing your children with me this year. They are such a wonderful group. Hug them tightly this weekend!

Week in Review
We had a busy and fun week in Room 31! The kids were excited to share about their Thanksgiving traditions and some of their memories from over the years. As a class, we created a thankful tree to decorate our classroom. Each of the leaves of our tree has something we are thankful for. We are quite a thankful group!
This week in math we started Unit 4: Decimals and Their Uses. We are only a few lessons in and we are seeing just how difficult decimals can be! We've been practicing how to correctly speak "decimal talk" and comparing decimals to fractions. We'll be spending next week doing much of the same. Incidentally, on Friday I sent home the unit two assessment and progress report that I forgot to send home weeks ago. I'll be sending home the unit three assessment and progress report next week.
We have been writing up a storm this week! We started our unit on essays by starting with a five paragraph essay about our favorite foods. With some yummy pictures to prompt them, students wrote very descriptive paragraphs and we practiced writing introductions and conclusions to essays. We'll continue with this unit through December.
In Social Studies we continue to study the North East Region of the United States. We've been practicing locating states on the UNited States map and playing JINGO (Geography Bingo) to learn some facts about all the 50 states.
This week in Reading, we read a story called Chin Yu Min and the Ginger Cat. It's an interesting story about a widow who has trouble asking for help from her friends. We'll be working on this story again next week with more of a writing focus.
With the the Holidays coming up, there is a lot of opportunity to celebrate and give back. This month we will be having another food drive sponsored by our World Ambassadors. Our class is collecting boxes of cereal. Our goal is 40 boxes for our class!
On December 21st, our class will have a hot cocoa and movie party. I'll be sending home a volunteer sheet for anyone who would like to help!
Upcoming Dates to Remember:
Holiday Bazaar - December 10th-14th
Report Cards - December 14th
Can Drive Collection Date - December 19th
Winter Band and Chorus Concert -
Winter Break - December 24th - January 2nd

A FINtastic Time!
My friend, Jillian Morris Brake came to speak to the fourth grade about her work with Sharks! Ms. Morris is a graduate of Marshwood High School and the University of New England. She is a marine biologist who loves the ocean and has a special love of sharks! During her talk she told us how important sharks are to the oceans of our world and how we can help!
You can visit http://sharks-ocearch.verite.com/ to track some Great White Sharks that were tagged in Massachusetts this summer and visit Jillian's site here: http://www.shark-girl.com/.
After her presentation we played a fun game or predator and prey! Students were Sharks or food, depending on which side of the room they started on. Such fun!

Week in Review Part 2: Oliver!
After the Veteran's Day Assembly we boarded a bus to the high school to see a sneak peak of the District Musical: Oliver!!
Can you spot two of our classmates?
Week in Review Part 1: Mock Election and Veteran's Day
Time is flying by in room 31! I have started this blog entry three times and haven't had the chance to finish it. We spent last week doing lots of fun things. On Tuesday we participated in a school wide mock election. It was a great addition to our mini-unit on our election process.
Here's Jack checking in to vote!
He's got his ballot!
Avery is working at the polls! Her job was to check of people as they came in to vote.
Voting!
Will placing his ballot in the "ballot box".
During our mock election we were able to vote for President, Senators and Representatives to House. Our results for our class were: Obama 13, Romney 7. Dill 2, King 10, Summers 4. Courtney 8, Pingree 8. The kids were excited to vote and were even more excited to find out that our mock election (Class and School Wide) correctly. As Great Works goes, so goes the Nation!
On Wednesday we celebrated Veteran's Day with an Assembly.
A panoramic view of the assembly. Look at all the Veterans!
While the Chorus sang, we skyped with a Dad who is stationed in Kuwait.
Lots of students read their essays, "Why Veterans are Heros?"
Members of the Navy, stationed on the USS Pasadena talk about their life on a submarine.
We all participated in the USS Pasadena cry!
"Anytime, anywhere!"

Week in Review
We had a full week in Room 31! One of the things we did this week is finish up our Monster Exchange Project. We started the unit by researched legends from around the world. Students learned about Godzilla, Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster and more! Then, using the information they gathered about these imaginary monsters, they created their own monsters! We had monsters named The Five Eyed Bed Monster! Vambana! and The Electrical Ape! After creating their monster, students wrote, revised and edited a description of their monster. Our partner class from Presidential Meadows Elementary in Texas received our description and drew our monsters as best they could. We did the same for them. You can check out our Monster Gallery here. You will see the original monster, description and redrawn monster in the gallery. We had a lot of fun and learned a lot about following directions and using describing words in our writing.
Our mini-unit on the election is in full swing! We will spend next week learning about the candidates. Our school will be holding a mock election on Tuesday, November 6th. While the rest of the nation decides the next president, Great Works will too! The election is great learning opportunity for our students. I encourage you to bring your kids with you when you vote on November 6th!
Multiplication facts are flying in our room! We've been working with our facts all week - learning about patterns, square numbers, tricks and memorizing the difficult ones. We will now be having weekly multiplication fact tests. We practice a lot at school, but there are some great ways you can practice at home. Flashcards are great. We also have fact triangles at school that can go home to practice as well. If you have an iPad, iPod or tablet there are some great apps to practice, too. Everyday Math Multiplication Baseball (1-6 and 1-12) is a fantastic app. There is also Everyday Math Beat the Computer (multiplication). Another cool app is Match-Up Math Multiplication and Division and Flash to Pass.
During a conference last week I was introduced to a great website to help with spelling. The site is Spelling City. You can sign up for a FREE account and set up your child's spelling list to practice all week. Let me know if you want to try and have any questions or problems accessing the site.
All the talks of the storm coming next week have the halls and classrooms at Great Works buzzing. This is a great time to talk about my expectations of students if we miss a day (or two!) of school due to weather or power outages. If school is canceled (say, on a Tuesday) and students have already received their Reading Log for the week, my expectation is that they read and respond that day. The only time students are excused from reading is if they are sick or out of school for family reasons. Snow, rain and lack of electricity shouldn't prevent us from reading. :)
Conferences went very well last week! Thank you to all the parents that came to see me. I'm looking forward to meeting the the other half of you on Thursday! I still have a few openings left if anyone would like to schedule a conference.
With Halloween and Trick or Treating coming up this week, I'm sure students will be asking questions about costumes and candy. No costumes can be worn at school and I would prefer no more than two pieces of candy be sent to school per day. Big bags of candy will be confiscated! ;)
Upcoming Dates to Remember:
November 1 - Parent Teacher Conferences
November 7 - MGWS Veteran's Day Assembly
November 7 - MGWS Sneak Peak, Oliver!

Week(s) in Review
We created our own imaginary insects during the week and student presented them at the end of the week. The insects are hanging from our ceiling. You can check them out during your visit to our classroom for Parent/Teacher conferences. The kids worked very hard on them, they are fantastic!!
We will make the switch to Social Studies for a mini-unit on the election process and then we'll move into maps and regions.
Last week in Math we finished up unit two and moved onto unit three. Unit three focuses on multiplication and division. We'll dive head first into memorizing our facts and we'll learn several ways to multiply and divide large numbers. It's a tough unit with a lot of new information. We're going to take our time and get it right!
Last week we started a new unit in our Junior Great Books series. The story is called "Tuesday of the Other June."The story is about a little girl who is bullied at swimming class. It has made for some great discussions in our classroom. This upcoming week we will complete a writing piece to go along with the story. Mrs. Goettlich and Mrs. Shaw will be co-teaching in our room during our Literacy block from now on. :)
Feel free to email me at anytime with questions or concerns.
Just a reminder, Parent Teacher Conferences are October 24th and November 1st. See you soon!

Week in Review
Not much to update today...we've been NECAP testing all week! We have one more math test on Tuesday and then makeups will begin for students who missed testing due to absence on Wednesday.
While we weren't testing, the students have been creating imaginary insects for our Science project! We will be presenting our projects to the class on Monday and Tuesday. Most students were able to finish the two paragraphs required for the project in class yesterday and today. If not, they will need to finish them over the weekend.
No spelling next week due to the short week!
I will be contacting parents who signed up for volunteering next week. Things have finally settled down enough for me to plan what I could use help with. Thank you to all those who volunteered!
...and just a quick note about toys in the classroom. We've had a few issues this week and last with students bringing in stuffed animals, toys and Pokemon cards. Unfortunately because of these issues, I am no longer allowing those things to be brought into class. They may bring them to use on the bus or at recess, but they may not be brought into class.
Dates to Remember:
October 8th - No School (Columbus Day)
October 10th - No Learning Lab (due to Staff Meeting)
October 11th - MGWS PTO at 6:30pm
October 13th - MGWS Camp Out
October 18th - Flu Clinic at MHS

Happy Fall! This kind of weather makes we want to curl up on my couch with a quilt, a cup of tea and a good book! I hope your enjoying the cooler weather and gorgeous colors on the trees!
NECAP Testing begins on Monday, October 1st and ends on October 9th. Makeup testing for kids that miss a section due to absence begins on October 10th. There will still be homework during testing, but it will not be as regular. I will be unable to fit all of the regular lessons into next week. There will be a spelling packet for this upcoming week, but there will be no spelling packet the week of Columbus Day. Students are allowed to chew gum during testing and may bring packs into school next week.
This week we read a short story called "The Gold Coin" by Alma Flor Ada. In the story Juan, the thief, goes through many changes. We spent time identifying when the changes were made in the story, gathering evidence of the changes and discussing whether the changes were good or bad. Next week, the students will write a short essay about why Juan gives away his gold coin at the end of the story.
In Math we have been working with sets of data. We learned about sample size and accuracy by counting and recounting boxes of raisins! In fourth grade we'll focus on the maximum, minimum, range, mean and mode for statistical landmarks.
Thank you to everyone who brought in supplies for our insect project! We will be working on creating our imaginary insects next week. I can't wait to see what the kids come up with! Our class pets are thriving. The caterpillars are eating nonstop. Many students have predicted that we'll have some chrysalis' when we return on Monday. Many of our meal worm pets have already begun the pupa stage! We're hoping for some beetles some time next week!
Book Orders will be in sometime this week. Thank you!
Upcoming Dates to remember:
Picture Day - October 2nd
No School October 8th - Columbus Day
Parent Teacher Conferences - October 24 and November 1(reminder slips coming home soon!)

Week in Review
It's only been three weeks, but everything is in full swing upstairs in room 31! We have been working very hard this week. The students' effort did not go unnoticed and I received many compliments from specialist teachers and administrators this week about the great behavior and positive attitudes they have. Way to go, kids!
During our Language Arts block this week, Mrs. Shaw joined us for a great discussion about our short story, "Thank you, Ma'm" by Langston Hughes. Be sure to ask your child about why they think Mrs. Jones had Roger come into her room and why she fed him dinner. It was interesting to hear the different reasons a lot of them came up with!
In Writing, students wrote a letter from the perspective from one for the main characters of our short story. We're learning how to use evidence from the story to support our ideas. Look for these letters to come home next week!
We have started Unit Two, Numbers and Data. Earlier in the week I sent home the Unit Two Family Letter. Keep that letter in a safe place! It will help with homework and vocabulary for this unit. I also have some Student Reference Books available for kids to keep at home. Let me know if you'd like one sent home! We also started our multiplication facts practice today. Any practice you can do at home with flashcards or iPad apps (list coming of great educational apps soon!) would be a great thing for your kids. We need to know our facts!! Unit One Assessments will be graded and progress reports will be sent home next week. Just a reminder: Math Assessments are graded using the Beginning, Developing and Secure scale.
Insects have taken over our classroom! In a good way, of course! Ha! We have meal worms we have "adopted". We'll be watching them over the next few weeks to observe metamorphosis. Right now, our meal worms are in the larva stage. We also have a new batch of caterpillars! We are very hopeful these caterpillars eat and eat and eat and eat!
Our NWEA testing is finished for the fall. We did great! There are a few kids that missed a test due do an absence or need to finish a test because of our limited schedule. I will share the results with you at our parent teacher conference next month. The class results will really help me with my planning and instruction. I'll be able to greater meet the individual needs of the students in our class.
Upcoming Dates to Remember:
Walk to School: September 28

Week in Review
Phew! This week was jam packed with lots of things to do! Thanks to all the parents who came out for Open House. It was great to see so many of you again! For those of you that didn't make it, I sent home a conference sign-up sheet with your child. Let me know if you didn't get one. Conferences will be held on October 24 and November 1 from 3:15-7:00pm. Soon, I'll be sending home a pre-conference sheet with your child. This sheet will help us make some goals for your child at our conference.
In Reading we began our Junior Great Books with "Thank you, M'am" by Langston Hughes. So far, students have come up with some great questions and connections to the story! We will study the story even further next week and see if we can answer some of the questions we have.
We also read several picture books this week. We read "The Greedy Triangle" by Marilyn Burns in Math. The triangle changes into lots of different shapes before realizing it wants to be a triangle again. In writing, we read "If" by Sarah Perry. We used her words and pictures to inspire our own class "If" book. I'll be posting pictures from our class book this weekend.
We are almost all the way through our first math unit! This week we learned how to draw circles with compasses. The class worked so hard on this! It's a hard skill to learn. We also learned what a radius is. There is a lot of new vocabulary words within this unit; we'll be posting them on our math word wall next week! We will also have our first math assessment next week. There is no need to study for this assessment at home. We will review the unit in class the day before the assessment. The review will come home if you'd like to review it with your child.
Thursday and Friday we finally started our insect unit! We talked about what we knew about insects and what we hope to learn from our unit. Today we talked about reading to learn vs. learning to read. We practiced highlighting the important information in a paragraph, the first steps to learning how to take notes. We also learned about the head, thorax and abdomen of insects.
We will start NWEA testing on Monday afternoon. Due to some (more) technical issues, we were unable to start this week. I will be able to share the results of the first assessment window with you at conferences.
Have a great weekend!

Week in Review
Wow! I can't believe how quickly the first week of school went by. The students and I spent the week getting to know each other, the room and the school! Their little brains took in a lot of new information this week. Time for two days to relax.
We were able to complete three math lessons this week. We introduced the Student Reference Book and learned all the different parts the book has. Ask your student about the Table of Contents, Index and Glossary! We also reviewed lines, line segments and rays and also played with straws to create shapes and angles. Math Study Links will be homework each night we complete a math lesson (except Fridays).
Our class has 15 minutes of Quiet Time each day. This is choice time for students. They may read, draw, doodle, relax, start on homework, etc. If a student finishes homework during quiet time, they will place a check mark next it in their assignment notebook. The assignment should still go home with them, however, in case you want to check it or they choose to look it over.
We will start Spelling, Reading and Science next week!
I look forward to seeing you at the Open House on Tuesday, September 11 at 6:30.
There will be an Instrumental Open House with Mr. Miller on September 14 from 5:30-7:00pm.

If you have any questions, feel free to email me at pamela.starkey@rsu35.org.
